Upcycling: Turning Vinyl Banners into Trendy Tote Bags

CR&A is always looking for ways to eliminate waste in Los Angeles, and we do so by using eco-friendly products and materials, as ways as sustainable ways to achieve this goal. Upcycling gives us the green factor we aim at, as it gives existing vinyl banners a second life. Creating long-lasting, resistant, and functional products from old banners is a great way to eliminate waste, reduce our carbon footprint, and do our part protecting the environment.

During the last couple of years, sustainability has become a buzzword to be found in every single industry, and print media can’t be left aside. After all, there is a lot of waste generated by this particular industry, giving us a particular opportunity to do our part and work towards change. Upcycling vinyl is one of the many ways businesses can take advantage of the waste they generate. Repurposing discarded material also allows items to become more functional and appealing than they were before.

In order to fully understand the impact this can have, we need to discuss the difference between recycling and upcycling materials. To begin with, each represents a different process and a different product. Recycling means breaking down items that we will reuse in order for them to produce material that will later become another item. This process of down-cycling degrades the value of the materials, which isn’t as helpful to the environment as one may think.

On the other hand, upcycling represents a more creative solution to waste management, as it reuses materials in a new and clever way. When we upcycle materials, we give them a second life and a new function. This is because, through upcycling, the finished product becomes more practical, more beautiful, and more valuable than what it was before.

With this in mind, CR&A Custom decided to upcycle some street-pole banners we had printed for the Día de Los Muertos Festival into an eco-friendly and functional solution. The result was a series of reusable tote bags with unique and beautiful designs. This sustainable alternative turns waste that is difficult to recycle into a completely functional, trendy, and appealing item that will definitely last for a very long time. We are also upcycling some banners we did for Metro and turning them into reusable bags

Protecting the environment is one of the core values we hold at CR&A Custom, and finding sustainable, eco-friendly solutions is part of our mission. Upcycling gives us the chance to do so while reducing the amount of waste that is generated and providing people with beautiful and functional items.
